La veu de les cendres (The voice from the ashes) is a sound installation that contains some of the poems from the Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters in a set of cassettes which can be played in any of the three walkmans scattered around the space. These poems tell the life stories about every single villager from Spoon River, a fictional town located in the United States of America during the early years of the 20th century. In the shape of an epitaph, these poems tell us general and particular facts that allow us to link each character with the others.

When the spectator enter into the installation space, he will find four pedestals: one of them contains a little box full of cassettes and the other three have a Walkman. The spectator is free for took a cassette and play it in any Walkman of the room. He can play the three walkmans together if he want. In these cassettes he will hear the poems from Anthology of Spoon River, but there is also something more: Recordings of musical improvisations inspired by every single character, performed by Sarah Claman, that will blend with the voice of the poems generating a musical atmosphere for the whole space.

The natural non-linear narrative of the Spoon River Anthology breaks, using the sound, the last wall of order and time that the paper can’t break. The spectators need to listen the stories and try to find the existing relations between them, or lose themselves in a cacophonic aesthetic chaos. Patience and to listen carefully are the only ways for accessing to the narrative content of this artwork.

Mechanical Menace

This track is part of a project by Tom Hull (composer) and Yan Li (writer) called ‘Suicide Factory’. The subject matter is dark and the music expresses this, combining the violin and cello with the sounds that we associate with industrialisation amongst other elements, such as Taiko (a form of traditional Japanese drumming and a special interest of Tom’s). Improvising for this recording session was exhausting! Joe (cello) and myself put really dug into our instruments in order to draw the agony out of them.

Per Tom’s recommendation, this is best listened to with good sound system and loud for the full effect.

Some Parts of the Back of Beyond [Performance]

Here is a video of “Some Parts of the Back of Beyond”, choreographed and performed by Emma-Jane Martin, with original score by Joan Cot Ros and tech by Hannah Jelly. Performed at the Winter Dance Symposium, Performance Centre Falmouth, January 2013. The musicians are: Ferran Samper (Percussion), Alex Gonzalez (Guitar), Kiko Ujaque (Bass), Jordi Montasell (Trombone) and myself on violin.

Some Parts of the Back of Beyond

The lovely Emma-Jane Martin choreographed this piece in which she appears solo, exploring movements inspired by the saying “The Back of Beyond”. Joan Cot Ros collaborated with Emma to compose the music of this piece and I appear on the tracks playing the violin. You can listen to the third movement of the piece here (click on “Some Parts of the Back of Beyond” and then “Escolta-la”, which means “listen to it” in Catalan). I will update with performance dates for the piece!

Two Steps

I was asked to add to this track by my brother, Peter Claman. A little violin improvisation and some mixing later, Two Steps was produced by Espionage (Dunedin, NZ).
