This is the trailer for the chamber opera River Lavalle, written by Fiona Farell (libretto) and Chris Adams (music). The footage was taken from a workshop performance of the opera that I was involved in earlier this year at the University of Otago, Dunedin, NZ.
Set in a 1940s recording studio, the orchestra performed on stage which (rather unusually) required that we pay special attention to our costume, hair, and make-up; a far cry from throwing on our comfy pit blacks and hiding underneath the well-lit stage!
But the message of the opera is about the well-being of New Zealand’s rivers. The opera is a “who-dunnit” featuring criminals from all walks of life responsible for the depletion of this natural resource.
